SUMMARY:Wilderness First Aid Course
DESCRIPTION:Course Overview\n\n\n\n18 years or older \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nCourse Overview \n\n\n\n30hr – 3 day Course \n\n\n\nThe NIM Medical Wilderness First Aid course will provide essential field first aid skills in a remote environment.  Participants will learn first aid techniques and will apply that knowledge through hands-on exercises and scenarios. \n\n\n\nThis course presents information that can be used in day hikes\, multi-day excursions\, weekend camping\, or packing trips\, and is designed for trail runners\, camp counselors and camp staff\, off-roading and 4×4 enthusiasts\,\, snowmobiling\, horse packing\, hikers\, climbers\, and other medical outdoor enthusiasts.   \n\n\n\nAn AHA CPR course will be included and integrated into this course. \n\n\n\nCourse Topics \n\n\n\n\nWilderness Medicine Overview and Protocols\n\n\n\nAnatomy and Physiology (Systems Approach)\n\n\n\nPatient Assessment Methodology\n\n\n\nMedical Equipment and Improv\n\n\n\nAirway and Respiratory Management\n\n\n\nFractures and Dislocations\n\n\n\nHead\, Spine\, and Torso Injuries\n\n\n\nHeat and Hydration\n\n\n\nCold Emergencies\n\n\n\nMedical Problems\n\n\n\nToxicology\n\n\n\nWound Care and Bleeding Control\n\n\n\nSearch and Rescue Techniques\n\n\n\n\nClassroom \n\n\n\nCourse days run roughly from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM with an hour-long break for lunch.  Course topics are scheduled but will operate on a rolling schedule as needed to optimize student learning and success.  The class format involves lectures integrated with practical scenarios\, case studies\, and skills sessions.  Scenarios and practice sessions will take place both inside and outside.  \n\n\n\nThe course is designed to recreate the flow of emergency incidents and the treatment of patients found in austere environments.  Learning aids and equipment may be used including UTVs\, Ambulances\, and Rescue Gear. Stage (moulage) blood and make-up are used to increase the experience of scenarios. Bring clothing appropriate for all weather conditions and temperatures while acting as the rescuer and the patient. Be prepared to hike moderate distances with a small day pack\, group-carry patients with litters\, and participate in outdoor learning activities in any weather. \n\n\n\nLogistics \n\n\n\nLocation:   \n\n\n\n\nThe course will be held at Storm Mountain in Rapid City\, SD. This site is a “camp” style facility on beautiful Black Hills property with numerous education / out buildings\, wilderness areas\, common areas\, dining hall\, etc. and is a short drive from Rapid City and Mt. Rushmore. \n\n\n\nStorm Mountain has an extensive trail system\, area climbing opportunities\, and access to Spring Creek.\n\n\n\n\nTravel: \n\n\n\n\nAddress or the location is 23740 Storm Mountain Road\, Rapid City\, SD 57702\n\n\n\nStudents are responsible for all travel to and from the teaching location (NIM staff may be available to shuttle students to and from the airport).  Nearest Airport:  Rapid City Regional Airport\n\n\n\n\nFood \n\n\n\n\nStudents should prepare to bring their own lunch each day. This course incorporates advanced concepts and prior experience in the field is advised.   \n\n\n\n \nThe clinical focus of the course will include content and live scenarios specific to Austere Environments\, Expedition / Travel Medicine\, Public Health and Humanitarian Emergencies\, Austere Medevac\, and Leadership Management.  This course is ideal for those seeking to be wildland firefighters\, humanitarian aid groups\, establishing field hospitals\, developing country medicine or in semi-tactical environments.  \n\n\n\n\n\nThis course is a stand-alone course and will provide an “APAP” certification with concepts that meet and exceed standard wilderness certifications.\n\n\n\nThis course does not include or meet the requirements of a TCCC or similar course\n\n\n\n\n\n \n  \nContinued Education \nFor Paramedics:  \n\n\n\n\n \nThis course offers 32 hrs of CAPCE accredited continuing education through NIM Medical. \n\n\n\n\n \nFor Physicians and PA’s: \n\n\n\n\n \nThis activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of the Wilderness Medical Society (WMS) and NIM Medical. This site is a “camp” style facility on beautiful Black Hills property with numerous education / out buildings\, wilderness areas\, common areas\, dining hall\, etc. and is a short drive from Rapid City and Mt. Rushmore.\nStorm Mountain has an extensive trail system\, area climbing opportunities\, and access to Spring Creek.\n\nTravel: \n\nAddress or the location is 23740 Storm Mountain Road\, Rapid City\, SD 57702\nStudents are responsible for all travel to and from the teaching location (NIM staff may be available to shuttle students to and from the airport).  Nearest Airport:  Rapid City Regional Airport\n\nLodging \n\nMultiple “dorm” style rooms are available for students and sleep up to 8 people.  Rooms will be assigned by NIM faculty as registrations and students arrive.  Each room has bunk-style beds and mattresses. Students should plan on bringing any/all bedding materials\, sleeping bags\, pillows etc.  All rooms and the entire facility is climate controlled.\nBathrooms and Showers are available in the facility and are “dorm” style with private shower stalls and common sink areas. Students should plan to bring all toiletries and personal supplies.\n\nFood \n\nThe course will be catered and 3 meals a day will be provided and water\, coffee\, hot chocolate\, etc will be available consistently.  A large dining hall is available in camp where meals will be served.  Specific diets may be accommodated if possible\, however  students with diet needs or allergies should plan on providing for their specific needs.\nGrocery stores\, markets\, etc. are a short drive into Rapid City\, SD.  Kitchen use for personal meals or diets may be available.\n\nCurriculum\nThe curriculum was developed with the understanding that medical care may be done in austere and wilderness environments and that medical personnel may be the sole provider on scene for extended time frames. DESCRIPTION:Course Overview\n18 years or older \nCurrent AHA BLS (CPR) certification is a prerequisite for the course. CPR can be taken in conjunction with the course through NIM Medical and will be completed prior to the beginning of the course. Online course through (AHA) must be taken prior skills session and a course certificate must be emailed prior to CPR skills session. \n  \nCourse Overview \n16hr – 2 day Course \nThe NIM Medical Wilderness First Aid course will provide essential field first aid skills in a remote environment.  Participants will learn first aid techniques and will apply that knowledge through hands-on exercises and scenarios. \nThis course presents information that can be used in day hikes\, multi-day excursions\, weekend camping\, or packing trips\, and is designed for trail runners\, camp counselors and camp staff\, off-roading and 4×4 enthusiasts\,\, snowmobiling\, horse packing\, hikers\, climbers\, and other medical outdoor enthusiasts.   \nCourse Requirements \n\nCurrent AHA BLS (CPR) certification is a prerequisite for the course \n\nCPR can be taken in conjunction with the course through NIM Medical and will be completed prior to the beginning of the course. \n\n\n\nOther prior medical training and experience is not required. \nCourse Topics \n\nWilderness Medicine Overview and Protocols\nAnatomy and Physiology (Systems Approach)\nPatient Assessment Methodology\nMedical Equipment and Improv\nAirway and Respiratory Management\nFractures and Dislocations\nHead\, Spine\, and Torso Injuries\nHeat and Hydration\nCold Emergencies\nMedical Problems\nToxicology\nWound Care and Bleeding Control\nSearch and Rescue Techniques\n\nClassroom \nCourse days run roughly from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM with an hour-long break for lunch.  Course topics are scheduled but will operate on a rolling schedule as needed to optimize student learning and success.  The class format involves lectures integrated with practical scenarios\, case studies\, and skills sessions.  Scenarios and practice sessions will take place both inside and outside.  \nThe course is designed to recreate the flow of emergency incidents and the treatment of patients found in austere environments.  Learning aids and equipment may be used including UTVs\, Ambulances\, and Rescue Gear. Stage (moulage) blood and make-up are used to increase the experience of scenarios. Bring clothing appropriate for all weather conditions and temperatures while acting as the rescuer and the patient.
