Fire Line Qualified EMTs & Paramedics
EMT:
This EMT may be staffing an ambulance located near the fire line at a “drop point.” The ambulance may be located along dirt roads, clearing, and /or base camp and off-road driving skills are necessary. This unit may be transporting a patient to the nearest healthcare facility, base camp, or rendezvous and this paramedic position requires that the individual maintain an understanding of access, egress, routes, and coordinates of the fire, their position, and appropriate healthcare locations and must be ready to treat and transport a patient for a significant timeframe (several hours).
This EMT may be traveling on foot with a hand crew along or near the fire line and/or may be utilizing a 4-wheel drive vehicle to travel along the fire line and off-road driving skills are necessary. The EMT must also be prepared to carry their medical pack for long durations (often 16hrs) while working in the field with the fire line crew and be capable of working several 16hr days in a row with little rest. The EMT will likely be partnered with a paramedic, however must be prepared to triage, make evacuation decisions, and treat patients independently as a solo provider.

REM Team
REM Paramedic:
This position must meet the requirements of both the Wildland Fire EMT and Wildland Fire Paramedic description. This position will travel with the NIM Medical REM Team (Rapid Extrication Unit). This is a team position and this individual must be comfortable operating in a close team environment to accomplish rescue-based care in an austere setting. A minimum of a Rope Ops course is required and the paramedic should be comfortable managing a patient in a harness and rope system and be familiar with basic rescue concepts. The paramedic on the REM Team has direct patient care responsibility and will focus on medical issues throughout a rescue attempt. This medic must also be prepared to work 16hr shifts for several days without reasonable rest. The REM Team will often be placed near the fireline and work with fire crews very closely and must be prepared to meet rigorous physical demands. This position requires attendance to a NIM Medical specific breakout session during the annual Wildland Fire course.

Medical Base Camp
Medical Base Unit Paramedic:
This provider may be deployed on a Medical Base Unit at or near the wildland fire and the fire base camp. This provider will attend to camp personnel and incoming wildland firefighters that arrived from the field. The Medical Base Unit provider must be prepared to manage numerous emergencies of any discipline (similar to a small emergency room or remote clinic) and be familiar with primary care medicine concepts. In addition, this provider must be familiar with evacuation guidelines and wildland fire and ICS management. This position requires attendance to a NIM Medical specific breakout session during the annual Wildland Fire course.
